Origin Smile Buddha - Pilgrimage for Smile Civilization

Origin Smile at Sanchi

The ‘Origin Smile’ is beautifully expressed in the face of the Buddha sculpted in the 4th century A.D. at Sanchi (near Bhopal), India.

Prof. Park Jae Woo, the founder of Su Jok Therapy and Smile Meditation, declared this unique statue as “The Smiling Buddha”, identifying it as a spiritual landmark—a Pilgrimage for the emerging Smile Civilisation. Here, one can feel and meditate on the Origin Smile—the smile of the soul.

The Discovery of ‘The Smiling Buddha’

In 2004, during his visit to India, Prof. Park traveled to Bhopal to deliver a series of lectures organized by the Smile Meditation Academy. During this visit, he toured Sanchi—a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its Great Stupa and ancient Buddhist monuments.

At the main stupa, Prof. Park observed four Buddha statues placed facing the four cardinal directions. Of these, only one—situated at the southern gateway—remained intact. The others had suffered damage due to historical changes in power and ideology.

It was this solitary, intact statue that caught his profound attention. He instantly recognized the Origin Smile on its face—not just an artistic smile, but a deep, soulful expression that reveals the smile of enlightenment.

He later shared:

“This statue was created before Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment. The sculptor, who was also a meditator, had once seen the young seeker meditating. In a moment of spiritual vision, he transcended time, glimpsed the future Enlightened Buddha, and captured the Origin Smile on this statue’s face.”

Spiritual Significance

Prof. Park emphasized that this Origin Smile is a gateway—those who meditate deeply upon it may connect with their own soul and inner joy. He also noted that this smile was likely the reason why this statue survived the centuries, while others were destroyed.

He featured the image of ‘The Smiling Buddha’ on the cover of Onnuri Magazine No. 15 (published by Su Jok Academy, Moscow) and began sharing this sacred discovery around the world.

Seminars & Pilgrimages

  • 2005: The International Annual Smile Meditation Seminar was held in Bhopal, organized by the Smile Meditation Academy under Prof. Park’s guidance. A full-day pilgrimage to Sanchi was conducted, where participants meditated at the site of The Smiling Buddha.

  • 2010: Prof. Park returned to Bhopal to conduct the final International India Seminar. During this event, he guided participants through Smile Meditation towards Origin Smile, and once again visited Sanchi.

Birth of Smile Land

During the 2010 visit, Prof. Park laid the foundation of Smile Land, located just 9 km from Sanchi, nestled among serene hills. This space was envisioned as the future site of a Smile Meditation Temple and Smile Ashram, where seekers from around the world can immerse themselves in the energy of the Origin Smile.

It was here that he also discovered:

  • Peacock Smile Meditation

  • Peacock Smile Taiji

  • Zone Sujok Ki Mission

Inspired by the peacock’s graceful and ecstatic dance, he recognized it as a symbol of perfection and divine joy. The peacock, also India’s national bird, became a central image in this unique Smile practice.
